  • Lungworm infection is caused by one of several parasitic roundworms. Cats can get a lungworm infection by swallowing infective stages of parasitic lungworm. The exact way that a cat is infected varies according to the life cycle of the parasite. This handout outlines the signs, diagnosis, and treatment for lungworm in dogs.

  • Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium that can be transmitted to dogs through the bite of an infected tick. Once in the bloodstream, the Lyme disease organism is carried to many parts of the body and is likely to localize in joints or kidneys.

  • Metronidazole (brand name Flagyl®) is used off label in the treatment of certain infections, such as those caused by Giardia and Trichomonas, in dogs, cats, small mammals, birds, reptiles, and other animals. It is often used to treat diarrhea and other intestinal problems.

  • Milbemycin oxime + afoxolaner (brand name Nexgard Spectra) is a heartworm disease preventive that also treats certain intestinal parasites, kills fleas and ticks, treats demodicosis caused by Demodex mites, and reduces Lyme disease infections in dogs. It is also used off-label to treat mite infestations in dogs.

  • Milbemycin oxime + lufenuron (brand name Sentinel) is a heartworm disease preventive that also treats internal parasites and controls flea populations in dogs. Milbemycin oxime + lufenuron is given by mouth as a flavored chew tablet.

  • Milbemycin oxime + lufenuron + praziquantel (brand name Sentinel Spectrum® is a heartworm disease preventive that also treats certain internal parasites and controls fleas in dogs. This combination medication is given by mouth as a flavored chew tablet.

  • Milbemycin oxime + praziquantel (brand name Interceptor Plus) is a heartworm disease preventive that also controls hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and tapeworms in dogs. It is given by mouth as a flavored chew tablet.

  • Milbemycin oxime + spinosad (brand name: Trifexis) is a heartworm disease preventive and controls internal parasites (e.g., hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) and fleas in dogs. Milbemycin oxime + spinosad is given by mouth as a flavored chewable tablet.

  • Feline miliary dermatitis is a skin condition that typically results from an underlying allergic reaction, most commonly to fleabites. An affected cat will have a very itchy rash and may lick, bite, and scratch at the affected skin, quickly progressing to small lesions with scabs on them. The offending allergen must be removed for long-term resolution.

  • Mites and lice can cause trouble for guinea pigs. Some mites may cause no clinical signs, while others can cause extreme signs, including itchiness, crusty skin, hair loss, and secondary bacterial skin infection. This article summarizes diagnosis and treatment.
