Parasites

  • Mites affecting pet hedgehogs, often called quill mites, are fairly common. Initially, an affected hedgehog may become itchy but if mites are left untreated, the clinical signs can become severe.

  • Moxidectin + fluralaner topical (Bravecto Plus, Vitrecto) is used in cats to prevent heartworms, treat and prevent fleas, and to treat intestinal parasites (hookworms and roundworms). It also kills black-legged ticks (deer ticks). It is used off label (extra label) in cats to treat other types of ticks, as well as skin mites and ear mites.

  • Moxidectin + imidacloprid topical (Advantage Multi, Imoxi) is used to prevent heartworms and treat intestinal parasites (hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) and to treat and prevent fleas in cats, dogs, and ferrets (Advantage Multi only). In dogs this combination product is also approved to treat sarcoptic mange and treat circulating heartworm microfilaria (immature heartworms); in cats it may also be used to treat ear mites.

  • Moxidectin + sarolaner + pyrantel (Simparica Trio) is used in dogs to prevent heartworms and to treat and prevent intestinal parasites (hookworms and roundworms), flea infestations, and tick infestations. This medication is given by mouth as a flavored chew tablet.

  • Myiasis is a parasitic infection of fly larvae (maggots). Certain fly species lay their eggs in wounds or, less commonly, on healthy skin, especially near the eyes, ears, or nose. Many species can cause this infection, including blow flies, flesh flies, and the New World screwworm.

  • Parasites are not commonly diagnosed in pet birds; however, when present, they can cause generalized debilitation. With external parasites, your veterinarian can often make a diagnosis based on a physical examination and a microscopic analysis of skin lesions. Intestinal parasites are usually discovered when the feces are examined microscopically. Blood parasites are typically found during a routine blood count. All anti-parasite treatment should be under the advice of your veterinarian.

  • The common rabbit pinworm, Passalurus ambiguus, is an intestinal parasite. It does not posea serious health threat to rabbits, but it can cause uncomfortable itching and skin inflammation or redness around the anus. Rabbits become infected with pinworms by eating feces that contain pinworm eggs. Pinworms are challenging to treat because rabbits are coprophagic, so can potentially reinfect themselves during treatment.
